Race Committe Help Instructions
J24 Race Committee - Help Instructions
These are notes from Sharon, Race Chairperson for IDA.
Thank you for your offer to help with J24 races.
When you are assigned to race committee you need to be at Ida Lewis at about 5PM. If you need to be late (no later than 5:20) or can’t make it, please call the dock office at 846-1969 Ext 1. If no answer, call Sharon on her cell phone at 401-741-8569
We need one person on Lime Rock (mark boat) each week. This person will assist primarily with setting and retrieving marks. Our mark boat driver is 84 and while he does a great job at driving should not do much physical work. There are three people on Lime Rock. In addition to the driver, another person handles the radio and records things, while the other generally provides assistance with anchors. Everyone on the mark boat must wear a PFD. I have purchased several of the nice self inflating ones. Just go to the dock office and sign one out when you arrive. The person on Lime Rock should be able to tie knots and pull anchors.
The second person from each Fleet boat will go on IDA, the signal boat. We would like this person to communicate by radio with the J24 Fleet Captains Will Welles or Pete Levesque. We have radios in the dock office so just get one when you arrive. Also pick up a PFD (as noted above). PFDs are required if you go to the bow on IDA but not in other places on the boat. This person will assist in providing information on courses the fleet would like to have that evening. As soon as the starting line has been set this person is asked to end comments as time will not allow changes based on preferences. Changes will still occur but only due to wind shifts or things like commercial traffic. This person may be asked to assist with flags or recording or other tasks we can quickly train you to do.
Any time only one person is available to help, they will go on Lime Rock.
Please wear some sort of boat shoe / sneaker; no sandals. Please bring warm clothing and rain gear as needed. It is cool on the water this time of year as you know.
There is no drinking on Ida Lewis boats so leave the beer at home please. Please do plan to join us after racing at the club bar. If you are over 21 the first two drinks per person are on us. We all enjoy getting to know our sailors and hope you join us. If you help out but can’t come for a drink that night, come on another evening. We will still buy you a drink.
Thank you ,
J24 Fleet 50 Race Committee
